00:01:29
Good evening and welcome to Nightline
Africa we're coming to you live from the
00:01:32
English service of the Voice of America
thanks for joining us I'm Peter Clottey in
00:01:36
Washington.
00:01:45
Do you agree with me of the British letter
that we all communicate can report to
00:01:51
the audience the public
apology when you don't have
00:01:55
a good idea. About it then you got
to got to bring this bill here and
00:02:02
pretty. Completely today and then that tens
of thousands all Sudanese demonstrators
00:02:08
protest against civilian rule
Sunday. That if there was
00:02:12
a change of leadership at the top people
think they are more likely to think that
00:02:17
elections was free and fair and if if they
take their actions which we in fact they
00:02:22
are more likely to support elections
as the best method of proving needed
00:02:26
a new survey shows
00:02:27
a majority of Africa's support democratic
elections behind large what we're trying
00:02:33
to do is to work very hard to achieve all
what you international partners because
00:02:38
negotiating with terrorists
is NEVER it is not
00:02:41
a government of terrorists that we work
with foreign governments will with the
00:02:45
International Red Cross and several of the
nations Nigeria vice president. Says the
00:02:51
administration and I believe there is
committed to resolving the own growing
00:02:54
security challenges those stories and
more coming up Nightline Africa.
00:03:12
Tens of thousands of students protesters
gathered in the capital harder to to
00:03:17
pressure of a transitional
military council T.M.C.
00:03:20
To hand over power to
00:03:21
a civilian that government Sunday dubbed
the 1000000 man March this attorney's
00:03:25
professional association said the practice
is aimed to recognize those who died in
00:03:30
the struggle to push the form of government
as well as to mark the 30 year rule of
00:03:36
deposed President Omar Hassan al Bashir
for more about Sunday's protest I reached
00:03:40
Mohammed Ali fans are a columnist
for Allah Akhbar image
00:03:45
a big newspaper invested in his capital
hard to the people who were walking along
00:03:50
the distance from about 10 kilometers
from the city on the remand of field.
00:03:58
Chanting and the police in front. Of
them. The protesters by using tear gas.
00:04:06
As the number was increasing and the
number become very huge the police stopped
00:04:10
throwing tear gas on the refrigerator
on the protests so. They had to think
00:04:17
the one of them is that
is. The common. And also.
00:04:25
The former president Bashir So right
now the police is using force.
00:04:33
We we can in the previous protest.
Life and we need also using
00:04:40
excessive force but this time we didn't
find it I think this is the little word
00:04:46
from the international organization and
human rights activists. Yesterday should
00:04:53
understand. That using. It is not
allowed and also they have 0 tolerance
00:04:59
in using the kind of forces against the
peaceful protests that in. Earlier on the
00:05:07
D.M.Z.
00:05:07
Warned the organizers of the protests there
was shoulder the blame or responsibility
00:05:12
. If any of this Protestants were to lose
your life what happened to go through it
00:05:18
any professional association has refuted
such allegation yesterday and they held
00:05:25
a press conference and said that we don't
have reporters we don't have those
00:05:29
reporters and you use their responsibility
to protect the peaceful protesters not
00:05:34
we are as a civilian they said
in a press conference and
00:05:37
a press statement. Through the ball
into the square feet and all the
00:05:44
responsibility of the
peaceful life of the people.
00:05:50
Condemned the harassment and the crackdown
on press freedom as you know yesterday
00:05:55
for his top press conference to be held
in the needs of professional unions. And
00:06:02
as an outskirt of hurdles are they going
to continue organizing regular protest to
00:06:07
pressure the administration the T.M.C.
00:06:10
To handle ballpark quickly
because recent that D.M.C.
00:06:13
Just accepted
00:06:15
a proposal by the African Union about
the transitional process of you know.
00:06:22
Professional Union officiation if
they is a key body or that organize
00:06:26
a protest every beginning of the week
they read what we call the schedule for
00:06:33
original activities this is started from
Sunday up to then they are also giving
00:06:40
the city activities
00:06:41
a specific time for all the protests and
what I'm going to do what's going to
00:06:45
happen and they are also said they are going
to many forums and workshops and they
00:06:51
are going to speak to the people on the
governing places in the market in the
00:06:55
street in any public place
they said that we have
00:06:59
a religion it is good it will be public
and their website and you know it so that
00:07:05
these days the Internet is not out here
but they're going to use this message to
00:07:11
post. Thing as
00:07:13
a traditional ways of communication
to inform the audience and the public
00:07:19
about the new. Activities and about
the new steps that we got are
00:07:26
going to do if he does not respond completely
to their demands what has been the
00:07:32
response of the following Sunday's
protest by the Sudanese professional
00:07:39
association and the odd month for
the immediate harm to walk to
00:07:42
a civilian regime. Still say that
it's at the head of the agreements
00:07:50
anything of the superior nothing can
Union and it says that to waiting for
00:07:54
a. Seat to get hand over the
names of the member of the
00:08:01
government in the presidential of the
president or Regarding the cabinet of
00:08:06
ministers to start very soon organizing and
for me the government as you know that
00:08:12
should be an initiative
00:08:13
a delay discussing the legally
discounted notice and this is
00:08:17
a show which he. Rejected and that everything
should be started from all of the 3
00:08:23
levels of the government that
is the Presidential Council and
00:08:26
a council of ministers and because it
is counted. Mohammed Ali if a czar is
00:08:31
a columnist for out there you may just as
in his article his faith I spoke with me
00:08:36
from Harvard to.
00:08:54
A newly released survey shows that
00:08:56
a majority of Africa's support democratic
elections if the outcome leads to
00:09:00
a change in leadership after about a days
00:09:03
a nonpartisan recent network that conducts
public attitude service and democracy
00:09:07
govern as economic conditions I related
issues on Africa for more on the Save the
00:09:12
Irish Michael Botton
00:09:14
a senior advice at the organization in
the latest Afro barometer poll which
00:09:19
considers public opinion to the end
of 2018 in about 3 dozen countries 3
00:09:26
quarters of the respondents fee spoke to
said that they thought that open regular
00:09:32
and fair elections were the best way to
select leaders they preferred elections to
00:09:38
any other method now possibly they might
be thinking of elections that are
00:09:43
controlled by
00:09:44
a dominant party so in order to check for
that we also asked people whether they
00:09:49
thought that multi party competition was
necessary and again about 2 thirds of the
00:09:56
respondents said that it was necessary to
have multiple parties so that they had
00:10:02
a choice at the ballot box so when they're
saying they prefer elections what
00:10:07
they're saying is they prefer regular open
and fair elections but I also understand
00:10:13
that surprisingly opposition party supporters
like the ruling party supporters to
00:10:19
see election as free and fair have a
nonpartisan legibly to how this is
00:10:25
a perception about the integrity of the
election talk to me about it yesterday. You
00:10:30
have it absolutely right Peter and it
is a surprising result let's just take
00:10:34
a step back and take the big
picture view and see. How
00:10:41
Africans see the quality of their elections
well about 80 percent think that say
00:10:48
at least reasonably free
and fair which I think is
00:10:52
a good sign it may be an overly generous
interpretation but it is roughly
00:10:59
consistent with what X expert opinion is
also saying to go back to this issue of
00:11:04
partisanship I think people would expect
that supporters of the ruling party would
00:11:09
be much more satisfied with the quality of
elections than the losing opposition but
00:11:15
in fact there's very little difference
between supporters of the ruling parties and
00:11:19
supporters of opposition parties when
they come to assess. The integrity of
00:11:25
elections I take this as
00:11:27
a really quite positive sign in that it is
necessary for the losers to give consent
00:11:34
in order for
00:11:34
a democratic system to function properly
the fact that the opposition hasn't given
00:11:40
up on elections just because they lose I
think indicates that they still see some
00:11:45
steam left in the democratic transformation
that has occurred in Africa since
00:11:52
991 but Michael also on the stunned citizens
in some of these respective countries
00:11:57
that you polled seem to suggest that the
preferred way to see ruling party lose to
00:12:04
want to put this in context then the
attachment importance and integrity of the
00:12:09
elections every day of the election was
free fit transparent and credible is
00:12:14
a policy which isn't from the ruling party
to the opposition party is this what
00:12:20
followed in your recent polling you probably
see read the report very closely paid
00:12:24
. In order to explain why
Africans support. Opens reactions
00:12:32
we find that one of the key factors is
whether they think that the last election
00:12:37
was indeed free and fair if not completely
for in fat least free and with minor
00:12:41
problems but in order to determine whether
they think it's free and fair we find
00:12:46
that the best explanation we can discover
in the data is that that previous
00:12:51
election led to an alternation of
top leaders that if there's been
00:12:56
a political turnover of ruling parties and
an opposition leader has come in so that
00:13:02
the calls will sequin seems to
go like this that if there is
00:13:05
a change of leadership at the top people
think I'm more likely to think that
00:13:10
elections were free and fair and if if they
think elections are free and fair they
00:13:15
are more likely to support elections as the
best method of choosing leaders Michael
00:13:21
Botton is
00:13:21
a senior adviser for Barghouti
spoke with me from new. Nigerian
00:13:38
vice president will Sheba just as President
Mohammed worries administration will
00:13:43
not be deterred in its commitment to resolve
the country's security challenges his
00:13:47
remarks follow criticisms that the government
has failed to come but kidnappings
00:13:52
and violence carried out by militants in
part 2 of my interview vice president give
00:13:57
me your response to reports of growing
security in several parts of Nigeria who
00:14:02
serve us with how do you respond
to those who said there has been
00:14:06
a sharp increase in kidnappings they cite
examples of the girls on the tube or
00:14:11
girls who have yet to be all brought home
to the appearance what do you say to that
00:14:16
but let's start with the fact that your
book goes of course you know the job of
00:14:19
those who were kidnapped in 242353060
when it was you to the release of
00:14:26
the Chibok girls so far about a 107 of
them back west in the process that's got
00:14:33
a database itself of trying to get them
back was pointed to as promptly as records
00:14:39
of a kidnap of
00:14:40
a duck she goes. Wheelbase
to. A fortune at least 5
00:14:47
of them did not come back for day
one of that media shy remains in
00:14:54
captivity so really did I say the government
well we wanted to just to make sure
00:15:00
that all our citizens are safe everywhere
they are now what the plan of the
00:15:06
terrorist is is to ensure that
that is not the case so it's
00:15:10
a constant battle between us and terrorism
this is what happens in many other parts
00:15:14
of the world where you have kidnappings
robbed options by terrorists I don't know
00:15:19
but I think that Balaji what we're trying
to do is to work very hard to show what
00:15:24
Cubans. No But no because negotiating
with terrorists is NEVER it is not
00:15:30
a government
00:15:30
a terrorist thing we work with foreign
governments we work with the International
00:15:34
Red Cross and several other of their shows
that help and that whole process of
00:15:38
trying to negotiate the return of the Chibok
girls or all of the of the doctor goes
00:15:44
on in particular they're shy before
remains up to 50 so how do you intend to
00:15:50
improve the living conditions of Nigerians
some people are saying the situation is
00:15:54
difficult how would your government help
to jumpstart the economy improve lives
00:16:00
combat corruption how would your
government do the stream prove the living
00:16:04
conditions of Nigeria's I think they just
challenge for us on our show in many
00:16:09
developing economies is that all of us in
our case I mean 2012 figures show for the
00:16:15
stuff that over
00:16:15
a 100000000 Nigerians were living in extreme
poverty the question of course is or
00:16:20
the problem of course is not about problem
of poverty was never systematically
00:16:25
addressed you know one saw when we came
in 2015 we decided on implementing
00:16:32
a social investment policy decision investment
program possibly the largest of its
00:16:37
kind anyway in Africa where
we where we budgeted
00:16:42
a sum of 500000000000 you know to address
these questions now how we wanted to have
00:16:47
to approach that or how of approached it
is 1st of all to try and create some kind
00:16:52
of choice safety net sorts. We didn't want
to do that by just gifts of any kind you
00:16:58
know so we did that by granting
microcredit locals to the
00:17:05
bottom of the pyramid working with the
Bank of Industry we targeted 2000000
00:17:10
potatoes across the country whose
inventions are usually not more than about
00:17:15
$3000.00 on. Our desire that we would
give them to do this almost 10000 now to
00:17:20
improve their inventions and then when they
pay back they get 15000. They say about
00:17:25
$30.00 all the way up to $100000.00 which
on the dock was one effective will
00:17:30
vampiring. People powering the full
knowledge of who will fall on the largest
00:17:36
number of those well what the what what the
same time considered risky for any kind
00:17:43
of credit facility was also an important
way of bringing them into the and showed
00:17:49
them to do so so that 2 more formalized
system where we are able to hold and train
00:17:55
them for
00:17:56
a way of those World Bank accounts for
them IMO The 2nd thing they did was
00:18:00
a what was called the holding
room school Feed which is
00:18:05
a program where we feed children in public
private schools and every day at the
00:18:11
moment waiting up on 1500000
children in 31 states
00:18:15
a lot that's 66000 put on program falls
1st because adult dresses questions
00:18:20
a lot of traditional time we know that my
nutrition is it may joke cause of mental
00:18:25
stunting which is
00:18:27
a public and on the reversible condition
so we walk on and on the course of our sex
00:18:33
and dodgy poll people in many of the kids
and in public private schools of course
00:18:39
children of the poll so I'm not sure you
know that's one of them then of course
00:18:44
well so are just one man with what we
call the M Pop will run yeah me or the
00:18:51
Nigerian vice president he spoke
with me from here in Washington D.C.
00:18:54
.
00:19:09
Dr Alexandre
00:19:10
a new man Science on the Venter who was
recently recognised in the United States
00:19:15
with
00:19:15
a distinguished patent for Award for his
innovative ideas he has about 30 registered
00:19:20
patents to his name he says African
countries can reap huge benefit. They
00:19:25
diligently pursuing of ation inventions and
paintings to learn more about his work
00:19:30
I restocked any mention by phone in Columbus
Ohio The good news here so many people
00:19:36
up innovation but you
are only recognized as
00:19:40
a distinguished innovator or lead
when your buttons all idea goes into
00:19:45
a product and it's making over $10000000.00
So that made me in recognized alongside
00:19:52
. A distinguish innovator look at the
recognition you've been traveling
00:19:59
across Africa you have concerns about some
of the things happening what have you
00:20:05
seen in Africa that you think can be
improved one cannot read lies that. We don't
00:20:11
have money. When we put money into
something or one quick with 10 but. In the
00:20:18
very same process requires money and
patience and requires that it should be done
00:20:24
very well with the right people and will
have the right gains but it still does not
00:20:29
assume there are
00:20:29
a wall and would think you are not capable
I mean the Web inventor or invention if
00:20:35
you in Africa if you would like at this
time to wear it in Africa but we are always
00:20:40
inventing every day on knowingly that sad
part is whatever we come out with it
00:20:46
doesn't get to the world so I have to
make enough money from that our site and
00:20:51
a simple example it in custom Will
Cain to have been in existence for
00:20:55
a long time that I've seen people happy
because I'm one of them Africa leaving
00:21:00
Ghana on the adhesive at the ready so the
question becomes I mean I do use the most
00:21:04
protected looking some of these issues
that you've identified and clearly
00:21:09
enumerated what steps can be taken by
institutions including the government
00:21:16
to help in this directive because as you
say people brimming with ideas ideas that
00:21:23
if I adopted properly with broad. Multics
steps who solves the enormous challenges
00:21:29
these countries on the continent face let
me talk about one problem and I'll look
00:21:33
at it from a different angle I'm
thinking that it is a big body which is
00:21:38
a process with Africa for instance so
if allowed to be able to come out with
00:21:43
a strong for them which is
tied to the coup was to be
00:21:47
a very good with about it said
this should be a way to get
00:21:51
a do formation in terms of in
00:21:53
a but up in new ideas the person who
writes on it and go through to an office
00:21:57
somewhere and then documentaries OK And
then in the that our that came up with the
00:22:01
idea as the fair to file currently
spent without the need to be weary of
00:22:08
letting people know of this event in process
so that if in that and different way
00:22:13
the office more has to report it because
that it doesn't fall below that and then
00:22:18
people should be aware not to say ideas
easily if you haven't even before Mason
00:22:22
which is going to help then as then has
to have been too soon where people can
00:22:28
disseminate information and those and to
Susan to keep good information the truth
00:22:34
possible you know I think it would do
fine is the someone coming registered
00:22:38
implemented it copying them for missing
it to someone to perceive it right but I
00:22:42
did end of the day about comes up with that
it's just I did need to be part of the
00:22:47
process before the person came up with
the idea and I've done it's have been
00:22:50
a robust requirement coming out with an
idea it doesn't just come out of the blue
00:22:56
idea comes when you see
00:22:58
a problem light the question is are we
trying to protect Africa all gone on the
00:23:02
global level I will look into put that
gonna Africa on the original or whatever
00:23:08
level that is what is the problem is the
problem that people have to look at it and
00:23:12
then come up with ideas and
then we take them through
00:23:15
a rigorous process Dr Alexander I mean mass
eyes on the event I spoke with me from
00:23:20
Columbus Ohio.
00:23:37
Economic parliamentarian is coming under

xenophobic attacks against foreigners

streets of Nairobi since
last week when a Kenyan M.P.
00:24:02
Said he would beat up foreign traders if
they did not leave the country Charles
00:24:06
County said in
00:24:07
a video that Tanzanian and Ugandan traders
were taking Kenyan businesses and enough
00:24:12
is enough Mr kind his remarks triggered
00:24:14
a diplomatic row in Tanzania and Prime
Minister some in the Kenyan high
00:24:18
commissioner for an explanation Kenya is
East Africa's economic hub attracting
00:24:22
people from across the region to move
there to make money so such remarks could
00:24:27
affect the foreign business
in Kenya Omar Samad is
00:24:30
a businessman in Nairobi Cecily business
hub he believes such remarks would only
00:24:34
discourage the foreign business community
in Kenya you know ideals not all of this
00:24:38
of course business can not only
cause a professional because M.P.
00:24:44
Richard on local believes that jugglers
comments hurt the global perception of the
00:24:48
Kenyan business community the
truth is going to fall be
00:24:52
a new something that we're dealing with I
think globally but the not so great has
00:24:56
been a big problem in South
Africa and now looks like
00:25:00
a NEW going to be another country that
may be considered to be has an awful big
00:25:04
country alley concept
00:25:06
a Kenyan business analyst says such remarks
have no place in the Kenyan business
00:25:10
community and it would not be good for any
party involved no absolutely not time
00:25:15
and I think you know the East African
community actually has the best performing
00:25:21
luck by the African continent and.
It would be very unfortunate to lose
00:25:28
again because of this friction and loose
talk but never the less it has been
00:25:34
a problem and specifically between Kenya
and Tanzania although Mr Kanye was
00:25:39
arrested by plainclothes police officers
outside the parliament buildings in
00:25:43
Nairobi for his remarks he has already
changed his tone saying his remarks were
00:25:48
meant to Ward China and not towards
Africans but some analysts believe that the
00:25:52
comments may have already affected the
global perception of Kenya Bill yabber

00:25:57
Washington. This
00:26:31
is the Voice of America and you're
listening to Nightline Africa it was Peter
00:26:35
quoting in Washington coming up in the
2nd half of gladly in Africa sponsored
00:26:39
Douglas and pull down music from our African
collection and that will be followed
00:26:42
by
00:26:43
a commentary by Dr Ginger and I for my UN
and the secretary general of the political
00:26:47
affairs but 1st the mayor
of Washington D.C.
00:26:50
Is off as an African affairs in partnership
with other groups had an African
00:26:54
fashion show and culture Expo Saturday
they vent short keys and celebrated the
00:26:58
nation's capital African fashion creativity
and culture joining me live in the
00:27:03
studio to talk about Saturday's event I
join Ali blow commission on commission on
00:27:09
African affairs enjoys don't call
fond of African fashion week D.C.
00:27:13
And
00:27:13
a partner with me is office on African
affairs Ladies hello and welcome thank you
00:27:20
good afternoon thank you so much for having
you you're welcome So afternoon thank
00:27:24
you so much for having me one. Well let me
come to you John or how do they even go
00:27:27
your city they've It was definitely
a success I think roughly maybe
00:27:32
a little over 250 people showed up and
what was so important about the event
00:27:38
yesterday is that we emphasize on promoting
small businesses in the community and
00:27:44
as we know there is a large
African community here in D.C.
00:27:48
I think it's the 2nd largest population
of Africans in the United States with it
00:27:53
the openings leading Nigerian 2nd and
3rd so and we know the different
00:28:00
groups tend to be business owners so for
the mayor's office and Afghan fairs it was
00:28:05
important to create
00:28:06
a platform to ensure that they they receive
the visibility that they deserve and
00:28:11
also make some money because at the end of
day what is the business if you can make
00:28:15
money so because of that take the
that was it was a success and we had
00:28:19
a hair braiders you know we have
00:28:21
a lot of African women in this area who
Brady here and there extremely talented and
00:28:26
a lot of times they don't get the promotion
that they deserve so they were able to
00:28:29
collect showcase their talent right
and then we also had fashion
00:28:33
a fashion show and as we know the African
fabric is booming all across the world
00:28:37
everybody wants an African attire right
an entire that is made with the African
00:28:42
fabric so the mayor's office and after
fares partnered with with Joyce who will
00:28:46
speak more about that that she's the one
who who handled the fashion aspect of the
00:28:50
let me come to you Joy spoke to me about
the fashion Expo How did people respond to
00:28:56
it and what impact do you think that would
have today and in the near future its
00:29:01
prospects basically absolutely So 1st I
want to acknowledge the participants or the
00:29:07
fashion designers that were part
of the show which is O.B.O.
00:29:10
Fashion house Evelyn nocere keys and
credo B M O H B could toward and they
00:29:17
were essential in making the show
00:29:19
a success their designs were great amazing
the audience responded very well they
00:29:25
were busy. Very please of lot of people the
models were exceptional they were great
00:29:30
a lot of people stood up and clapped and
really enjoyed it but most importantly to
00:29:34
pick it playing off of what you and I said
it was really important to provide the
00:29:38
platform for these designers because
00:29:39
a lot of the time these designers do not
have you know these platforms so for the
00:29:43
office of African Affairs to really want
to focus in on these fashion designers and
00:29:47
call me and to assist them with that
it was it was amazing and it was
00:29:51
a process that you know always forever be
grateful for because I was able to see
00:29:55
the importance and how effective the opposite
African affairs is and trying to make
00:30:01
sure that they are promoting
businesses in the D.C.
00:30:04
So far has been your experience working
with the Office of African affairs I mean
00:30:08
there's office it was absolutely great I
work with Mamadou he was the one that
00:30:13
called me out of the blue and said this
is an idea that I'm having I I want to
00:30:17
focus on braiders and I want to focus
on D.C. Fashion specifically D.C.
00:30:22
Passion design is based in the D.C.
00:30:23
Metropolitan area and
from there we developed
00:30:26
a team with John Jennifer Queen and we
all work together very very well so I
00:30:33
feel like they really did do a great job
in ensuring that this was a that was
00:30:37
a success Donna let me come to you there
are sometimes speculations that the
00:30:42
mayor's office doesn't do much for the
African community what say you about it well
00:30:48
I want disagree for 2 reasons one there
is an office called the mayor's office on
00:30:54
African affairs right so for
00:30:56
a mayor to create that office says I see
the population and I see the issues so I'm
00:31:02
going to create an office specifically to
handle the issues impacting persons of
00:31:07
African descent in the District of
Columbia in addition to having the office
00:31:11
there's a commission which is the Commission
on African affairs and I serve as
00:31:15
a commissioner and and it's
00:31:17
a group of 12 people that are appointed
but strictly by the mayor again the
00:31:23
commissions job is just so. The mayor's
office and African Affairs So the mayor has
00:31:28
essentially gone above and beyond to ensure
that the issues of person of African
00:31:34
descent here in the district are not only
recognized but also are also but also
00:31:40
should provide
00:31:41
a platform to ensure those those
issues are properly addressed so as as
00:31:46
a commissioner and along with my amazing
and commissioners our job is to
00:31:52
advise the mayor on how to handle policy
decisions when it comes to African
00:31:59
community so we testify the hearings we
attend various events throughout the
00:32:04
community we put together events we have
town hall discussions to find out what are
00:32:09
the issues we have right people to our
monthly meetings or bi monthly meetings to
00:32:13
find out how can we get the community
more engaged right so I will completely
00:32:19
disagree with that notion that the mayor
does not support because if she did not
00:32:25
you would not have to offer
you and I have an office and
00:32:28
a commission comprised of attorneys
doctors. Public servants
00:32:35
to ensure that that is the commissioners
essentially comp comprised of people from
00:32:41
the community can all of us before we run
out be in the engagement with the African
00:32:45
community and what has been the response
from the African community based on the
00:32:49
policies being implemented by the mayor
strictly on African issues that she's
00:32:54
encountered I think that the
office the administration has done
00:32:59
a great job for example there was one
particular instance where there was there's
00:33:05
there was a grant there's
00:33:06
a grant available for Africans who want
to apply for citizenship there is funding
00:33:12
available for the whole process to assist
you with so there are so many ways that
00:33:18
the mayor's mayor is actually is supporting
her constituents ACA go on and on and
00:33:23
on and and speak but
what I can. Well you as
00:33:26
a commissioner I didn't join the
commission just like I have
00:33:28
a title and right I joined the commission
because of what the main gate says that
00:33:34
we have to do and because the mayor and the
office and an Afghan faires allows the
00:33:40
commissioners to truly be the voice of the
community and to work together to ensure
00:33:46
the problems are solved and to
implement policies that will have
00:33:51
a positive impact on the community at large
before we go briefly just I come to you
00:33:56
1st before going to join or so what
should people expect. Next time
00:34:03
for this expo so the next Expo will
be held September 2019 we will have
00:34:09
a we're already of different.
Fashion Show featuring D.C.
00:34:15
Based designers but not only D.C.
00:34:16
Based designers but people. People
all over the country and abroad also
00:34:23
have shops where people could
come in and shop we'll have
00:34:26
a panel discussion people could
come and learn about starting
00:34:29
a business of fashion designing
business all over the world so there's
00:34:33
a variety of different things to look forward
to in September thank you last if you
00:34:38
were before we go expectations
00:34:41
a few words forward the commission in
conjunction with the mayor's office and.
00:34:48
We're looking forward to working with the
community. Again to find out what are the
00:34:52
needs and what we can do to assist them and
I forgot to mention this. Part earlier
00:34:59
that the mayor's office on after affairs
actually has grants for small business.
00:35:08
So there are
00:35:09
a lot of services offered by the office I
will recommend anyone who's listening to
00:35:15
go on the mayor's office on African affairs
website and see what the resources and
00:35:20
what the programs are available to you as
00:35:22
a taxpayer in the District of Columbia. Is
the commission on commission on African
00:35:28
affairs enjoy African fashion week and
00:35:31
a partner with me as of his own African
affairs they join me live here in

Kameron remain top of Group F.
00:36:15
After goalless draw with
00:36:16
a gun to 5 time we now as beat Ghana 20
in the 2017 semifinals with the 4 of the

00:36:24
a 3rd place teams qualifying for the knockout
stage come I don't know where protests
00:36:28
reach the last 16 after
starting their defense with
00:36:31
a 20 win over Guinea-Bissau while
gun away held to a draw with
00:36:37
a Binny and in the open up for Kameron
with 4 points of the 2 games it should be
00:36:42
enough to reach the knockout phase gunna
have been to the quarter finals of the
00:36:47
past 8 after
00:36:48
a couple of nations and now they have to
depend on their final group game against
00:36:53
going to be solved meanwhile had been
indicated the chance of qualifying for the
00:36:56
last 16 alive with
00:36:58
a goalless draw against the cell in
nice my area forced to settle for
00:37:03
a draw with Mauritania after get out of
those 90 minute goal was disallowed to

00:38:06
chances of reaching the knockout stages

00:38:10
a 2nd defeat in as many games India Fost
Africa 5 nations Meanwhile South Africa
00:38:16
boosted their chances of reaching the last
16 by beating the neighbors in the maybe
00:38:20
a 10 South Africa will attempt to secure
place in the last 16 when they face group
00:38:26
leaders Morrocco on Monday and maybe I still

00:38:30
much qualification of themselves
by they will need to score the
00:38:33
a fuss tournament goal since 2008 to beat
ivory of course and hope group really
00:38:39
does Morocco bit South Africa by more than
one goal and Mohamed Salah made one I'm
00:38:44
scored one as was Egypt and 7 times we know
us beat Conger 20 to move into the last
00:38:50

go through as group winners if they are
00:39:04
void defeat against 2nd place to Uganda

00:48:33
Let's take
00:48:33
a closer look at Africa problems the prospect
in time of conflict in time of peace
00:48:38
. A former U.N.
00:48:41
Undersecretary general for
police kind of it's not
00:48:43
a. Good thing Africa did 28 most developed
00:48:50
countries to be in G.
00:48:53
20 has just concluded that
summit begins in well sucka
00:49:00
chip. Early African country that
belong to the group is South Africa
00:49:08
and though many Africans
we wonder why since
00:49:14
Gere was
00:49:16
a larger economy than some
Africa but may be thinking
00:49:23
more are also the industrial
capacity of South Africa
00:49:30
which is of course get on top of
Nigeria this year in Osaka the
00:49:37
G 20 states trying to tackle the issue
00:49:43
of Ward kid is since
President. Was inaugurated
00:49:51
war period as being in dollar
more he has. Issued in
00:49:58
the logic of sanctions. Own
shipping tell us against member
00:50:04
states by the way many member states
of the United Nations believes that
00:50:11
these you not to go in measures and
diaries illegal in terms of the chart.
00:50:19
Of the United Nations also going through
this unilateral measures is the
00:50:26
tendency of the United States
issue what is cause secondary to
00:50:33
sanctions against those members of
the international community not made
00:50:40
disagrees with the U.S.
00:50:42
Sanctions on savored to comply
with them according to do night
00:50:49
States if you do not follow
sanctions against or party
00:50:56
then you become subject to busy
sanctions so this is something which
00:51:02
all did kind to tackle.
Is the main subject that
00:51:09
was looked at
00:51:11
a 2nd apart from that does been some
problem between the United States and
00:51:18
China because President
has issued many sweeping
00:51:25
tires against China and there is if you
view in the international community
00:51:32
that these are destabilized was treated
so they were waiting to see where the
00:51:39
president term presidents were used and
like agreements to be able to stabilize or
00:51:46
trip that. This law is concerned
the end of the summits both
00:51:53
presidents from President announced
that despite all the talks are now on.
00:52:00
Back but that of being no results
in the negotiations under any
00:52:06
circumstances president jump announced
that United States would not
00:52:13
be issuing new diets on
China those double lives
00:52:20
being the situation but there are the
states that are going to find ways around
00:52:27
president trumps unilateral measures
drily issued. Without Notice
00:52:33
for example the European
states are now trying to find
00:52:39
a way around sanctions
against Iran but using no
00:52:46
don't like currency Also
article sucka president G.
00:52:52
Putting und she tried to see
whether they could use some butter
00:52:58
system to get around US
banking system and. In
00:53:04
a very interesting meeting between
Prime Minister Modi president putting
00:53:11
the prime minister Mordred toes
be good deeds but he had to issue
00:53:18
these values against 28 US
productive to react against
00:53:25
US sanctions and this would affect our
bone to get in California. Affect
00:53:31
100000 walkers so these other ways they're
trying to see what could be done in
00:53:38
terms of the community it seems
that they can say yes' of agreed to
00:53:45
try to modernize all the form W. Or
do no one says whether they have
00:53:52
consulted the developing countries
in this and devil also has been some
00:53:59
decision on the issue of climate change
because as the McCorkle frontside said they

the audience the public
apology when you don't have
00:01:55
a good idea. About it then you got
to got to bring this bill here and
00:02:02
pretty. Completely today and then that tens
of thousands all Sudanese demonstrators
00:02:08
protest against civilian rule
Sunday. That if there was
00:02:12
a change of leadership at the top people
think they are more likely to think that
00:02:17
elections was free and fair and if if they
take their actions which we in fact they
00:02:22
are more likely to support elections
as the best method of proving needed
00:02:26
a new survey shows
00:02:27
a majority of Africa's support democratic
elections behind large what we're trying
00:02:33
to do is to work very hard to achieve all
what you international partners because
00:02:38
negotiating with terrorists
is NEVER it is not
00:02:41
a government of terrorists that we work

To hand over power to

is aimed to recognize those who died in
00:03:30
the struggle to push the form of government
as well as to mark the 30 year rule of
00:03:36
deposed President Omar Hassan al Bashir
for more about Sunday's protest I reached
00:03:40
Mohammed Ali fans are a columnist
for Allah Akhbar image
00:03:45
a big newspaper invested in his capital
hard to the people who were walking along
00:03:50
the distance from about 10 kilometers
from the city on the remand of field.
00:03:58
Chanting and the police in front. Of
them. The protesters by using tear gas.
00:04:06
As the number was increasing and the
number become very huge the police stopped
00:04:10
throwing tear gas on the refrigerator
on the protests so. They had to think
00:04:17
the one of them is that
is. The common. And also.
00:04:25
The former president Bashir So right
now the police is using force.
00:04:33
We we can in the previous protest.
Life and we need also using
00:04:40
excessive force but this time we didn't
find it I think this is the little word
00:04:46
from the international organization and
human rights activists. Yesterday should
00:04:53
understand. That using. It is not
allowed and also they have 0 tolerance
00:04:59
in using the kind of forces against the
peaceful protests that in. Earlier on the
00:05:07
D.M.Z.
00:05:07
Warned the organizers of the protests there
was shoulder the blame or responsibility
00:05:12
. If any of this Protestants were to lose
your life what happened to go through it
00:05:18
any professional association has refuted
such allegation yesterday and they held
00:05:25
a press conference and said that we don't
have reporters we don't have those
00:05:29
reporters and you use their responsibility
to protect the peaceful protesters not
00:05:34
we are as a civilian they said
in a press conference and
00:05:37
a press statement. Through the ball
into the square feet and all the
00:05:44
responsibility of the
peaceful life of the people.
00:05:50
Condemned the harassment and the crackdown
on press freedom as you know yesterday
00:05:55
for his top press conference to be held
in the needs of professional unions. And
00:06:02
as an outskirt of hurdles are they going
to continue organizing regular protest to
00:06:07
pressure the administration the T.M.C.
00:06:10
To handle ballpark quickly
because recent that D.M.C.
00:06:13
Just accepted
00:06:15
a proposal by the African Union about
the transitional process of you know.
00:06:22
Professional Union officiation if
they is a key body or that organize
00:06:26
a protest every beginning of the week
they read what we call the schedule for
00:06:33
original activities this is started from
Sunday up to then they are also giving
00:06:40
the city activities
00:06:41
a specific time for all the protests and
what I'm going to do what's going to
00:06:45
happen and they are also said they are going
to many forums and workshops and they
00:06:51
are going to speak to the people on the
governing places in the market in the
00:06:55
street in any public place
they said that we have
00:06:59
a religion it is good it will be public
and their website and you know it so that
00:07:05
these days the Internet is not out here
but they're going to use this message to
00:07:11
post. Thing as
00:07:13
a traditional ways of communication
to inform the audience and the public
00:07:19
about the new. Activities and about
the new steps that we got are
00:07:26
going to do if he does not respond completely
to their demands what has been the
00:07:32
response of the following Sunday's
protest by the Sudanese professional
00:07:39
association and the odd month for
the immediate harm to walk to
00:07:42
a civilian regime. Still say that
it's at the head of the agreements
00:07:50
anything of the superior nothing can
Union and it says that to waiting for
00:07:54
a. Seat to get hand over the
names of the member of the
00:08:01
government in the presidential of the
president or Regarding the cabinet of
00:08:06
ministers to start very soon organizing and
for me the government as you know that
00:08:12
should be an initiative
00:08:13
a delay discussing the legally
discounted notice and this is
00:08:17
a show which he. Rejected and that everything
should be started from all of the 3
00:08:23
levels of the government that
is the Presidential Council and
00:08:26
a council of ministers and because it
is counted. Mohammed Ali if a czar is
00:08:31
a columnist for out there you may just as
in his article his faith I spoke with me
00:08:36
from Harvard to.
00:08:54
A newly released survey shows that
00:08:56
a majority of Africa's support democratic
elections if the outcome leads to
00:09:00
a change in leadership after about a days
00:09:03
a nonpartisan recent network that conducts
public attitude service and democracy
00:09:07
govern as economic conditions I related
issues on Africa for more on the Save the
00:09:12
Irish Michael Botton
00:09:14
a senior advice at the organization in
the latest Afro barometer poll which
00:09:19
considers public opinion to the end
of 2018 in about 3 dozen countries 3
00:09:26
quarters of the respondents fee spoke to
said that they thought that open regular
00:09:32
and fair elections were the best way to
select leaders they preferred elections to
00:09:38
any other method now possibly they might
be thinking of elections that are
00:09:43
controlled by
00:09:44
a dominant party so in order to check for
that we also asked people whether they
00:09:49
thought that multi party competition was
necessary and again about 2 thirds of the
00:09:56
respondents said that it was necessary to
have multiple parties so that they had
00:10:02
a choice at the ballot box so when they're
saying they prefer elections what
00:10:07
they're saying is they prefer regular open
and fair elections but I also understand
00:10:13
that surprisingly opposition party supporters
like the ruling party supporters to
00:10:19
see election as free and fair have a
nonpartisan legibly to how this is
00:10:25
a perception about the integrity of the
election talk to me about it yesterday. You
00:10:30
have it absolutely right Peter and it
is a surprising result let's just take
00:10:34
a step back and take the big
picture view and see. How
00:10:41
Africans see the quality of their elections
well about 80 percent think that say
00:10:48
at least reasonably free
and fair which I think is
00:10:52
a good sign it may be an overly generous
interpretation but it is roughly
00:10:59
consistent with what X expert opinion is
also saying to go back to this issue of
00:11:04
partisanship I think people would expect
that supporters of the ruling party would
00:11:09
be much more satisfied with the quality of
elections than the losing opposition but
00:11:15
in fact there's very little difference
between supporters of the ruling parties and
00:11:19
supporters of opposition parties when
they come to assess. The integrity of
00:11:25
elections I take this as
00:11:27
a really quite positive sign in that it is
necessary for the losers to give consent
00:11:34
in order for
00:11:34
a democratic system to function properly
the fact that the opposition hasn't given
00:11:40
up on elections just because they lose I
think indicates that they still see some
00:11:45
steam left in the democratic transformation
that has occurred in Africa since
00:11:52
991 but Michael also on the stunned citizens
in some of these respective countries
00:11:57
that you polled seem to suggest that the
preferred way to see ruling party lose to
00:12:04
want to put this in context then the
attachment importance and integrity of the
00:12:09
elections every day of the election was
free fit transparent and credible is
00:12:14
a policy which isn't from the ruling party
to the opposition party is this what
00:12:20
followed in your recent polling you probably
see read the report very closely paid
00:12:24
. In order to explain why
Africans support. Opens reactions
00:12:32
we find that one of the key factors is
whether they think that the last election
00:12:37
was indeed free and fair if not completely
for in fat least free and with minor
00:12:41
problems but in order to determine whether
they think it's free and fair we find
00:12:46
that the best explanation we can discover
in the data is that that previous
00:12:51
election led to an alternation of
top leaders that if there's been
00:12:56
a political turnover of ruling parties and
an opposition leader has come in so that
00:13:02
the calls will sequin seems to
go like this that if there is
00:13:05
a change of leadership at the top people
think I'm more likely to think that
00:13:10
elections were free and fair and if if they
think elections are free and fair they
00:13:15
are more likely to support elections as the
best method of choosing leaders Michael
00:13:21
Botton is
00:13:21
a senior adviser for Barghouti
spoke with me from new. Nigerian
00:13:38
vice president will Sheba just as President
Mohammed worries administration will
00:13:43
not be deterred in its commitment to resolve
the country's security challenges his
00:13:47
remarks follow criticisms that the government
has failed to come but kidnappings
00:13:52
and violence carried out by militants in
part 2 of my interview vice president give
00:13:57
me your response to reports of growing
security in several parts of Nigeria who
00:14:02
serve us with how do you respond
to those who said there has been
00:14:06
a sharp increase in kidnappings they cite
examples of the girls on the tube or
00:14:11
girls who have yet to be all brought home
to the appearance what do you say to that
00:14:16
but let's start with the fact that your
book goes of course you know the job of
00:14:19
those who were kidnapped in 242353060
when it was you to the release of
00:14:26
the Chibok girls so far about a 107 of
them back west in the process that's got
00:14:33
a database itself of trying to get them
back was pointed to as promptly as records
00:14:39
of a kidnap of
00:14:40
a duck she goes. Wheelbase
to. A fortune at least 5
00:14:47
of them did not come back for day
one of that media shy remains in
00:14:54
captivity so really did I say the government
well we wanted to just to make sure
00:15:00
that all our citizens are safe everywhere
they are now what the plan of the
00:15:06
terrorist is is to ensure that
that is not the case so it's
00:15:10
a constant battle between us and terrorism
this is what happens in many other parts
00:15:14
of the world where you have kidnappings
robbed options by terrorists I don't know
00:15:19
but I think that Balaji what we're trying
to do is to work very hard to show what
00:15:24
Cubans. No But no because negotiating
with terrorists is NEVER it is not
00:15:30
a government
00:15:30
a terrorist thing we work with foreign
governments we work with the International
00:15:34
Red Cross and several other of their shows
that help and that whole process of
00:15:38
trying to negotiate the return of the Chibok
girls or all of the of the doctor goes
00:15:44
on in particular they're shy before
remains up to 50 so how do you intend to
00:15:50
improve the living conditions of Nigerians
some people are saying the situation is
00:15:54
difficult how would your government help
to jumpstart the economy improve lives
00:16:00
combat corruption how would your
government do the stream prove the living
00:16:04
conditions of Nigeria's I think they just
challenge for us on our show in many
00:16:09
developing economies is that all of us in
our case I mean 2012 figures show for the
00:16:15
stuff that over
00:16:15
a 100000000 Nigerians were living in extreme
poverty the question of course is or
00:16:20
the problem of course is not about problem
of poverty was never systematically
00:16:25
addressed you know one saw when we came
in 2015 we decided on implementing
00:16:32
a social investment policy decision investment
program possibly the largest of its
00:16:37
kind anyway in Africa where
we where we budgeted
00:16:42
a sum of 500000000000 you know to address
these questions now how we wanted to have
00:16:47
to approach that or how of approached it
is 1st of all to try and create some kind
00:16:52
of choice safety net sorts. We didn't want
to do that by just gifts of any kind you
00:16:58
know so we did that by granting
microcredit locals to the
00:17:05
bottom of the pyramid working with the
Bank of Industry we targeted 2000000
00:17:10
potatoes across the country whose
inventions are usually not more than about
00:17:15
$3000.00 on. Our desire that we would
give them to do this almost 10000 now to
00:17:20
improve their inventions and then when they
pay back they get 15000. They say about
00:17:25
$30.00 all the way up to $100000.00 which
on the dock was one effective will
00:17:30
vampiring. People powering the full
knowledge of who will fall on the largest
00:17:36
number of those well what the what what the
same time considered risky for any kind
00:17:43
of credit facility was also an important
way of bringing them into the and showed
00:17:49
them to do so so that 2 more formalized
system where we are able to hold and train
00:17:55
them for
00:17:56
a way of those World Bank accounts for
them IMO The 2nd thing they did was
00:18:00
a what was called the holding
room school Feed which is
00:18:05
a program where we feed children in public
private schools and every day at the
00:18:11
moment waiting up on 1500000
children in 31 states
00:18:15
a lot that's 66000 put on program falls
1st because adult dresses questions
00:18:20
a lot of traditional time we know that my
nutrition is it may joke cause of mental
00:18:25
stunting which is
00:18:27
a public and on the reversible condition
so we walk on and on the course of our sex
00:18:33
and dodgy poll people in many of the kids
and in public private schools of course
00:18:39
children of the poll so I'm not sure you
know that's one of them then of course
00:18:44
well so are just one man with what we
call the M Pop will run yeah me or the
00:18:51
Nigerian vice president he spoke
with me from here in Washington D.C.
00:18:54
.

Dr Alexandre
00:19:10
a new man Science on the Venter who was
recently recognised in the United States
00:19:15
with
00:19:15
a distinguished patent for Award for his
innovative ideas he has about 30 registered
00:19:20
patents to his name he says African
countries can reap huge benefit. They
00:19:25
diligently pursuing of ation inventions and
paintings to learn more about his work
00:19:30
I restocked any mention by phone in Columbus
Ohio The good news here so many people
00:19:36
up innovation but you
are only recognized as
00:19:40
a distinguished innovator or lead
when your buttons all idea goes into
00:19:45
a product and it's making over $10000000.00
So that made me in recognized alongside
00:19:52
. A distinguish innovator look at the
recognition you've been traveling
00:19:59
across Africa you have concerns about some
of the things happening what have you
00:20:05
seen in Africa that you think can be
improved one cannot read lies that. We don't
00:20:11
have money. When we put money into
something or one quick with 10 but. In the
00:20:18
very same process requires money and
patience and requires that it should be done
00:20:24
very well with the right people and will
have the right gains but it still does not
00:20:29
assume there are
00:20:29
a wall and would think you are not capable
I mean the Web inventor or invention if
00:20:35
you in Africa if you would like at this
time to wear it in Africa but we are always
00:20:40
inventing every day on knowingly that sad
part is whatever we come out with it
00:20:46
doesn't get to the world so I have to
make enough money from that our site and
00:20:51
a simple example it in custom Will
Cain to have been in existence for
00:20:55
a long time that I've seen people happy
because I'm one of them Africa leaving
00:21:00
Ghana on the adhesive at the ready so the
question becomes I mean I do use the most
00:21:04
protected looking some of these issues
that you've identified and clearly
00:21:09
enumerated what steps can be taken by
institutions including the government
00:21:16
to help in this directive because as you
say people brimming with ideas ideas that
00:21:23
if I adopted properly with broad. Multics
steps who solves the enormous challenges
00:21:29
these countries on the continent face let
me talk about one problem and I'll look
00:21:33
at it from a different angle I'm
thinking that it is a big body which is
00:21:38
a process with Africa for instance so
if allowed to be able to come out with
00:21:43
a strong for them which is
tied to the coup was to be
00:21:47
a very good with about it said
this should be a way to get
00:21:51
a do formation in terms of in
00:21:53
a but up in new ideas the person who
writes on it and go through to an office
00:21:57
somewhere and then documentaries OK And
then in the that our that came up with the
00:22:01
idea as the fair to file currently
spent without the need to be weary of
00:22:08
letting people know of this event in process
so that if in that and different way
00:22:13
the office more has to report it because
that it doesn't fall below that and then
00:22:18
people should be aware not to say ideas
easily if you haven't even before Mason
00:22:22
which is going to help then as then has
to have been too soon where people can
00:22:28
disseminate information and those and to
Susan to keep good information the truth
00:22:34
possible you know I think it would do
fine is the someone coming registered
00:22:38
implemented it copying them for missing
it to someone to perceive it right but I
00:22:42
did end of the day about comes up with that
it's just I did need to be part of the
00:22:47
process before the person came up with
the idea and I've done it's have been
00:22:50
a robust requirement coming out with an
idea it doesn't just come out of the blue
00:22:56
idea comes when you see
00:22:58
a problem light the question is are we
trying to protect Africa all gone on the
00:23:02
global level I will look into put that
gonna Africa on the original or whatever
00:23:08
level that is what is the problem is the
problem that people have to look at it and
00:23:12
then come up with ideas and
then we take them through
00:23:15
a rigorous process Dr Alexander I mean mass
eyes on the event I spoke with me from
00:23:20
Columbus Ohio.
00:23:37
Economic parliamentarian is coming under
criticism after reportedly making
00:23:41
xenophobic attacks against foreigners
Charles who was arrested following his
00:23:45
remarks faces charges of inciting voters
against foreigners Jad houses directed him
00:23:51
to be here at the police
station on Tuesday for
00:23:54
a mock deal yabber how small the talk
about xenophobia has been echoing in the
00:23:59
streets of Nairobi since
last week when a Kenyan M.P.
00:24:02
Said he would beat up foreign traders if
they did not leave the country Charles
00:24:06
County said in
00:24:07
a video that Tanzanian and Ugandan traders
were taking Kenyan businesses and enough
00:24:12
is enough Mr kind his remarks triggered
00:24:14
a diplomatic row in Tanzania and Prime
Minister some in the Kenyan high
00:24:18
commissioner for an explanation Kenya is
East Africa's economic hub attracting
00:24:22
people from across the region to move
there to make money so such remarks could
00:24:27
affect the foreign business
in Kenya Omar Samad is
00:24:30
a businessman in Nairobi Cecily business
hub he believes such remarks would only
00:24:34
discourage the foreign business community
in Kenya you know ideals not all of this
00:24:38
of course business can not only
cause a professional because M.P.
00:24:44
Richard on local believes that jugglers
comments hurt the global perception of the
00:24:48
Kenyan business community the
truth is going to fall be
00:24:52
a new something that we're dealing with I
think globally but the not so great has
00:24:56
been a big problem in South
Africa and now looks like
00:25:00
a NEW going to be another country that
may be considered to be has an awful big
00:25:04
country alley concept
00:25:06
a Kenyan business analyst says such remarks
have no place in the Kenyan business
00:25:10
community and it would not be good for any
party involved no absolutely not time
00:25:15
and I think you know the East African
community actually has the best performing
00:25:21
luck by the African continent and.
It would be very unfortunate to lose
00:25:28
again because of this friction and loose
talk but never the less it has been
00:25:34
a problem and specifically between Kenya
and Tanzania although Mr Kanye was
00:25:39
arrested by plainclothes police officers
outside the parliament buildings in
00:25:43
Nairobi for his remarks he has already
changed his tone saying his remarks were
00:25:48
meant to Ward China and not towards
Africans but some analysts believe that the
00:25:52
comments may have already affected the
global perception of Kenya Bill yabber

Washington. This
00:26:31

00:26:35
quoting in Washington coming up in the
2nd half of gladly in Africa sponsored
00:26:39
Douglas and pull down music from our African
collection and that will be followed
00:26:42
by
00:26:43
a commentary by Dr Ginger and I for my UN
and the secretary general of the political
00:26:47
affairs but 1st the mayor
of Washington D.C.
00:26:50
Is off as an African affairs in partnership
with other groups had an African
00:26:54
fashion show and culture Expo Saturday
they vent short keys and celebrated the
00:26:58
nation's capital African fashion creativity
and culture joining me live in the
00:27:03
studio to talk about Saturday's event I
join Ali blow commission on commission on
00:27:09
African affairs enjoys don't call
fond of African fashion week D.C.
00:27:13
And
00:27:13
a partner with me is office on African
affairs Ladies hello and welcome thank you
00:27:20
good afternoon thank you so much for having
you you're welcome So afternoon thank
00:27:24
you so much for having me one. Well let me
come to you John or how do they even go
00:27:27
your city they've It was definitely
a success I think roughly maybe
00:27:32
a little over 250 people showed up and
what was so important about the event
00:27:38
yesterday is that we emphasize on promoting
small businesses in the community and
00:27:44
as we know there is a large
African community here in D.C.
00:27:48
I think it's the 2nd largest population
of Africans in the United States with it
00:27:53
the openings leading Nigerian 2nd and
3rd so and we know the different
00:28:00
groups tend to be business owners so for
the mayor's office and Afghan fairs it was
00:28:05
important to create
00:28:06
a platform to ensure that they they receive
the visibility that they deserve and
00:28:11
also make some money because at the end of
day what is the business if you can make
00:28:15
money so because of that take the
that was it was a success and we had
00:28:19
a hair braiders you know we have
00:28:21
a lot of African women in this area who
Brady here and there extremely talented and
00:28:26
a lot of times they don't get the promotion
that they deserve so they were able to
00:28:29
collect showcase their talent right
and then we also had fashion
00:28:33
a fashion show and as we know the African
fabric is booming all across the world
00:28:37
everybody wants an African attire right
an entire that is made with the African
00:28:42
fabric so the mayor's office and after
fares partnered with with Joyce who will
00:28:46
speak more about that that she's the one
who who handled the fashion aspect of the
00:28:50
let me come to you Joy spoke to me about
the fashion Expo How did people respond to
00:28:56
it and what impact do you think that would
have today and in the near future its
00:29:01
prospects basically absolutely So 1st I
want to acknowledge the participants or the
00:29:07
fashion designers that were part
of the show which is O.B.O.
00:29:10
Fashion house Evelyn nocere keys and
credo B M O H B could toward and they
00:29:17
were essential in making the show
00:29:19
a success their designs were great amazing
the audience responded very well they
00:29:25
were busy. Very please of lot of people the
models were exceptional they were great
00:29:30
a lot of people stood up and clapped and
really enjoyed it but most importantly to
00:29:34
pick it playing off of what you and I said
it was really important to provide the
00:29:38
platform for these designers because
00:29:39
a lot of the time these designers do not
have you know these platforms so for the
00:29:43
office of African Affairs to really want
to focus in on these fashion designers and
00:29:47
call me and to assist them with that
it was it was amazing and it was
00:29:51
a process that you know always forever be
grateful for because I was able to see
00:29:55
the importance and how effective the opposite
African affairs is and trying to make
00:30:01
sure that they are promoting
businesses in the D.C.
00:30:04
So far has been your experience working
with the Office of African affairs I mean
00:30:08
there's office it was absolutely great I
work with Mamadou he was the one that
00:30:13
called me out of the blue and said this
is an idea that I'm having I I want to
00:30:17
focus on braiders and I want to focus
on D.C. Fashion specifically D.C.
00:30:22
Passion design is based in the D.C.
00:30:23
Metropolitan area and
from there we developed
00:30:26
a team with John Jennifer Queen and we
all work together very very well so I
00:30:33
feel like they really did do a great job
in ensuring that this was a that was
00:30:37
a success Donna let me come to you there
are sometimes speculations that the
00:30:42
mayor's office doesn't do much for the
African community what say you about it well
00:30:48
I want disagree for 2 reasons one there
is an office called the mayor's office on
00:30:54
African affairs right so for
00:30:56
a mayor to create that office says I see
the population and I see the issues so I'm
00:31:02
going to create an office specifically to
handle the issues impacting persons of
00:31:07
African descent in the District of
Columbia in addition to having the office
00:31:11
there's a commission which is the Commission
on African affairs and I serve as
00:31:15
a commissioner and and it's
00:31:17
a group of 12 people that are appointed
but strictly by the mayor again the
00:31:23
commissions job is just so. The mayor's
office and African Affairs So the mayor has
00:31:28
essentially gone above and beyond to ensure
that the issues of person of African
00:31:34
descent here in the district are not only
recognized but also are also but also
00:31:40
should provide
00:31:41
a platform to ensure those those
issues are properly addressed so as as
00:31:46
a commissioner and along with my amazing
and commissioners our job is to
00:31:52
advise the mayor on how to handle policy
decisions when it comes to African
00:31:59
community so we testify the hearings we
attend various events throughout the
00:32:04
community we put together events we have
town hall discussions to find out what are
00:32:09
the issues we have right people to our
monthly meetings or bi monthly meetings to
00:32:13
find out how can we get the community
more engaged right so I will completely
00:32:19
disagree with that notion that the mayor
does not support because if she did not
00:32:25
you would not have to offer
you and I have an office and
00:32:28
a commission comprised of attorneys
doctors. Public servants
00:32:35
to ensure that that is the commissioners
essentially comp comprised of people from
00:32:41
the community can all of us before we run
out be in the engagement with the African
00:32:45
community and what has been the response
from the African community based on the
00:32:49
policies being implemented by the mayor
strictly on African issues that she's
00:32:54
encountered I think that the
office the administration has done
00:32:59
a great job for example there was one
particular instance where there was there's
00:33:05
there was a grant there's
00:33:06
a grant available for Africans who want
to apply for citizenship there is funding
00:33:12
available for the whole process to assist
you with so there are so many ways that
00:33:18
the mayor's mayor is actually is supporting
her constituents ACA go on and on and
00:33:23
on and and speak but
what I can. Well you as
00:33:26
a commissioner I didn't join the
commission just like I have
00:33:28
a title and right I joined the commission
because of what the main gate says that
00:33:34
we have to do and because the mayor and the
office and an Afghan faires allows the
00:33:40
commissioners to truly be the voice of the
community and to work together to ensure
00:33:46
the problems are solved and to
implement policies that will have
00:33:51
a positive impact on the community at large
before we go briefly just I come to you
00:33:56
1st before going to join or so what
should people expect. Next time
00:34:03
for this expo so the next Expo will
be held September 2019 we will have
00:34:09
a we're already of different.
Fashion Show featuring D.C.
00:34:15
Based designers but not only D.C.
00:34:16
Based designers but people. People
all over the country and abroad also
00:34:23
have shops where people could
come in and shop we'll have
00:34:26
a panel discussion people could
come and learn about starting
00:34:29
a business of fashion designing
business all over the world so there's
00:34:33
a variety of different things to look forward
to in September thank you last if you
00:34:38
were before we go expectations
00:34:41
a few words forward the commission in
conjunction with the mayor's office and.
00:34:48
We're looking forward to working with the
community. Again to find out what are the
00:34:52
needs and what we can do to assist them and
I forgot to mention this. Part earlier
00:34:59
that the mayor's office on after affairs
actually has grants for small business.
00:35:08
So there are
00:35:09
a lot of services offered by the office I
will recommend anyone who's listening to
00:35:15
go on the mayor's office on African affairs
website and see what the resources and
00:35:20
what the programs are available to you as
00:35:22
a taxpayer in the District of Columbia. Is
the commission on commission on African
00:35:28
affairs enjoy African fashion week and
00:35:31
a partner with me as of his own African
affairs they join me live here in
00:35:35
Washington D.C.
00:35:36
. Time
00:35:59
for Africa sports and for that let's join
Douglas. Hello Douglas Hi Peter and good
00:36:04
evening sports fans Wacom tonight Len Africa
sports let's begin with the Africa Cup
00:36:10
of Nations in Egypt defending champions
Kameron remain top of Group F.
00:36:15
After goalless draw with
00:36:16
a gun to 5 time we now as beat Ghana 20
in the 2017 semifinals with the 4 of the
00:36:23
6
00:36:24
a 3rd place teams qualifying for the knockout
stage come I don't know where protests
00:36:28
reach the last 16 after
starting their defense with
00:36:31
a 20 win over Guinea-Bissau while
gun away held to a draw with
00:36:37
a Binny and in the open up for Kameron
with 4 points of the 2 games it should be
00:36:42
enough to reach the knockout phase gunna
have been to the quarter finals of the
00:36:47
past 8 after
00:36:48
a couple of nations and now they have to
depend on their final group game against
00:36:53
going to be solved meanwhile had been
indicated the chance of qualifying for the
00:36:56
last 16 alive with
00:36:58
a goalless draw against the cell in
nice my area forced to settle for
00:37:03
a draw with Mauritania after get out of
those 90 minute goal was disallowed to
00:37:09
newsier drew 11 with a 1000000 for a
dame group ease the game on what are now
00:37:14
a need to beat group leaders Mali in the
final group game on Tuesday to qualify for
00:37:19
the last 16 while Mauritania and the group
Campaign Against the news yet the same
00:37:24
day Algeria beats in a guard to
clinch a place in the last 16 in
00:37:29
a group sees other game Kenya came
from behind to beat tonnes an E.F.
00:37:33
32 The result moves Kenya live on 3 points
instead of God who have beaten 10 by
00:37:39
lead. While Tanzania exit the
tournament through Sachin for the
00:37:44
a faster victory in your place in it go on
Tanzania face Algeria in the final group
00:37:48
games on Monday while
Augusta had their 1st off
00:37:51
a couple of nations we made by
beauty of your only mother just got
00:37:55
a 2nd in the group with 4
points after this victory and
00:37:58
a draw against him in the face and
00:38:00
a Geria who are top of. 6 points in the
final group game on Sunday but only as
00:38:06
chances of reaching the knockout stages
are as good as over after suffering
00:38:10
a 2nd defeat in as many games India Fost
Africa 5 nations Meanwhile South Africa
00:38:16
boosted their chances of reaching the last
16 by beating the neighbors in the maybe
00:38:20
a 10 South Africa will attempt to secure
place in the last 16 when they face group
00:38:26
leaders Morrocco on Monday and maybe I still
have I not say the chance of what too
00:38:30
much qualification of themselves
by they will need to score the
00:38:33
a fuss tournament goal since 2008 to beat
ivory of course and hope group really
00:38:39
does Morocco bit South Africa by more than
one goal and Mohamed Salah made one I'm
00:38:44
scored one as was Egypt and 7 times we know
us beat Conger 20 to move into the last

Each. Sunday on Nightline Africa
is the time we get to relax and
00:41:22
reflect a flashback with music from
the continent hearing the praise for
00:41:27
a train with Iraq and with me.

And that was asked on the music spot hope
you enjoy the music from Africa service
00:48:16
of the Voice of America in Washington.
00:48:33
Let's take
00:48:33
a closer look at Africa problems the prospect
in time of conflict in time of peace
00:48:38
. A former U.N.
00:48:41
Undersecretary general for
police kind of it's not
00:48:43
a. Good thing Africa did 28 most developed
00:48:50
countries to be in G.
00:48:53
20 has just concluded that
summit begins in well sucka
00:49:00
chip. Early African country that
belong to the group is South Africa
00:49:08
and though many Africans
we wonder why since
00:49:14
Gere was
00:49:16
a larger economy than some
Africa but may be thinking
00:49:23
more are also the industrial
capacity of South Africa
00:49:30
which is of course get on top of
Nigeria this year in Osaka the
00:49:37
G 20 states trying to tackle the issue
00:49:43
of Ward kid is since
President. Was inaugurated
00:49:51
war period as being in dollar
more he has. Issued in
00:49:58
the logic of sanctions. Own
shipping tell us against member
00:50:04
states by the way many member states
of the United Nations believes that
00:50:11
these you not to go in measures and
diaries illegal in terms of the chart.
00:50:19
Of the United Nations also going through
this unilateral measures is the
00:50:26
tendency of the United States
issue what is cause secondary to
00:50:33
sanctions against those members of
the international community not made
00:50:40
disagrees with the U.S.
00:50:42
Sanctions on savored to comply
with them according to do night
00:50:49
States if you do not follow
sanctions against or party
00:50:56
then you become subject to busy
sanctions so this is something which
00:51:02
all did kind to tackle.
Is the main subject that
00:51:09
was looked at
00:51:11
a 2nd apart from that does been some
problem between the United States and
00:51:18
China because President
has issued many sweeping
00:51:25
tires against China and there is if you
view in the international community
00:51:32
that these are destabilized was treated
so they were waiting to see where the
00:51:39
president term presidents were used and
like agreements to be able to stabilize or
00:51:46
trip that. This law is concerned
the end of the summits both
00:51:53
presidents from President announced
that despite all the talks are now on.
00:52:00
Back but that of being no results
in the negotiations under any
00:52:06
circumstances president jump announced
that United States would not
00:52:13
be issuing new diets on
China those double lives
00:52:20
being the situation but there are the
states that are going to find ways around
00:52:27
president trumps unilateral measures
drily issued. Without Notice
00:52:33
for example the European
states are now trying to find
00:52:39
a way around sanctions
against Iran but using no
00:52:46
don't like currency Also
article sucka president G.
00:52:52
Putting und she tried to see
whether they could use some butter
00:52:58
system to get around US
banking system and. In
00:53:04
a very interesting meeting between
Prime Minister Modi president putting
00:53:11
the prime minister Mordred toes
be good deeds but he had to issue
00:53:18
these values against 28 US
productive to react against
00:53:25
US sanctions and this would affect our
bone to get in California. Affect
00:53:31
100000 walkers so these other ways they're
trying to see what could be done in
00:53:38
terms of the community it seems
that they can say yes' of agreed to
00:53:45
try to modernize all the form W. Or
do no one says whether they have
00:53:52
consulted the developing countries
in this and devil also has been some
00:53:59
decision on the issue of climate change
because as the McCorkle frontside said they
00:54:05
would not sign to communicate on list of
friends to exchange finally President
00:54:12
dumbass been complaining that
in reverse was allowed to go to
00:54:17
a Goodman US cars in the street
that no one can deny that Africans
00:54:24
in all scared agreements of the short
stick sir it is important for us to come
00:54:30
policymakers followed. Look to good
decision because some of the later.
00:54:40
We'll talk to them and it's important for
them to learn the lesson to be able to
00:54:45
tackle the issue which will affect people
I thank You that was one man's point of
00:54:51
view a commentary by Dr
James Doohan a former U.N.

then the men crossed back into South Korea
00:56:41

00:56:46
Gallo reports Trump's private talks with
Kim lasted about 50 minutes turning into
00:56:51
an impromptu summit when the 2 leaders
emerged they came out announcing Trump was
00:56:56
announcing at least that working level
talks had resumed and that the 2 sides had
00:57:02
agreed to form that team Donald Trump said
in order to quote work on issues that
00:57:08
they'll be meeting in the next few weeks
the if they can work something out and you
00:57:12
can sort of trump in language that we'll

House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said
Sunday resumption of trade talks between
00:57:27
the U.S. And China is
00:57:28
a very big deal but acknowledged there is
no immediate prospect for an agreement
00:57:33
between the world's 2 largest economies He
said the countries had reached agreement
00:57:38
on 90 percent of
00:57:39
a new deal by early May before talks
broke down in what turned out to be
00:57:44
a 7 week stalemate the U.S.
00:57:46
President Donald Trump and Chinese President
Xi Jinping agreed Saturday on the
00:57:51
sidelines of the Group of 20 economic
summit in Japan to restart negotiations but
00:57:58
Kudlow assess that the last 10 percent
could be the tapas toughest with such

unresolved issues as cyber attacks

war in Afghanistan this is the 7th round
00:58:25

the year long dialogue the discussions in

Albanians headed to the polls Sunday
amid high tensions between the ruling an
00:58:49
opposition parties and
00:58:51
a tug of war between the country's prime
minister and the president the main
00:58:55
opposition parties are boycotting the
municipal elections accusing the socialist
00:58:59
led government of Prime Minister Eddie
Rama of previous electoral fraud and
00:59:03
corruption Raman his government have denied
the allegations and insisted on holding
00:59:08
the vote even after President said he was
postponing it until October amid security
00:59:14
concerns. The International Organization
for Migration says more than 32000
00:59:20
migrants worldwide have died or gone
missing between 20142018 but those figures
00:59:27
underestimate the true nature and extent
of the problem as many migrant deaths are
00:59:31
never reported and many bodies are
never recovered nevertheless U.N.
00:59:35
Researchers say the statistics paid
00:59:37
a very grim picture of the perils awaiting
the hundreds of thousands of refugees
00:59:42
and migrants risking their lives
in search of protection or
00:59:45
a better life the report shows nearly 18000
people have died or gone missing on the

Africa to Europe the remains of almost
00:59:56
2 thirds of those victims have not been

01:00:00
majority of the 2200 deaths in Southeast
Asia and most of the 288 deaths recorded
01:00:07
in South Asia since 2014 were of
Afghan migrants 40 African migrants
01:00:13

German charity ship sea watch 3 have spent
01:00:18
